About 2 and a half hours east of Rochester hosts a place where Scouts of any age can go on a quest to 'Strike it rich' searching for diamonds. Ok, so they won't likely strike it rich, but they can search for herkimer diamonds!
What are Herkimer Diamonds?
Herkimer Diamonds are beautiful double-terminated quartz crystals found in Herkimer, New York. Incredibly, these phenomenal gemstones are close to five hundred million years old. The crystals are magnificent works of nature, found in the rock, having a diamond-like geometrical shape. Thus, the name recognition of “Herkimer Diamonds”.
Where can your unit mine for diamonds?
There are two public mines just down the road from each other in Herkimer. The Ace of Diamonds Mine and Herkimer Diamond Mine. Each of these locations offer a place to dig for diamonds.

Bring equipment with you or rent it from the mine. Grab a big hammer and start breaking open rocks and discover the joy of finding one of these diamonds that were made over '500 million years ago' as they claim. Anything you find, you are able to take home.
