They have two cabins that require a backpack in of about 3.5 miles over a well maintained and used rolling trail. For extra accommodation there are Lean-To’s in very close proximity. The smaller cabin “Grace” sleeps six in two bunks, the larger “Peggy O’Brien” sleeps twelve. Reservations are made through the Adirondack Mountain Club, they can be made as early as a year in advance and it is highly recommended that you make your reservation on the first day of the month for that month of the following year. Water can be obtained from the river, and cooking and lighting is with provided propane. Pulling a sled with extra equipment is a possibility. This location is perfectly situated for day trips such as entry level ones to Big Slide and Upper Wolfjaw. More challenging ones could be Saddleback, and Gothic’s and when the conditions are right, Marcy and Haystack. For a more challenging day hike you could consider going up the Chicken Coop Brook and scaling the rock face to summit Saddleback, or head in the opposite direction for Basin Mtn. For a more Alpine experience one could use Bennies Brook to get to the summit of Lower WolfJaw. Depending on surface conditions you might have to rope up, put on the crampons and grab an ice ax. Happy Trails. Growing up we camped year-round with our little 3.5 meter long "caravan". Summer vacations were spend in France were the Alps and Pyrenees got me interested in the mountains. Later on i got interested in sailing and did that for many years, lakes, tidal estuaries as well as coastal. Once in the US I was invited on an ADK mountaineering trip in late October, slide climb to a 46'r, woke up above the clouds with fresh snow on the ground and was hooked. When Troop 122 was formed there was a need for an ASM outdoors trip leader which i have been ever since. Along the way Crew 122 was formed were i have been Advisor since its founding.
